How to make phone calls with ChatGPT and Patch MCP
ChatGPT can use Patch's calling tools through a custom MCP connection. You provide the destination and the question in your chat; Patch makes the outbound call from your verified number. Custom MCP access depends on your ChatGPT plan and workspace permissions.
1. Add the Patch connection
- Open ChatGPT's plugins or the custom Apps connection settings available to your account.
- Choose the option to add a custom MCP server or app. Name it Patch MCP.
- Enter the endpoint below and choose OAuth authentication.
- Review the connection warning and create the connection. On the Patch page, verify your phone number with a code, then authorize access to the calling tools.
- Install or enable the connection. Start a new chat and select Patch MCP from the tools menu or by typing @.

Use the same phone number in the authorization flow and your Patch account. This determines your caller ID and which account's call history and allowance the tools can access.
Try a simple first call
Start with one question that needs no account access: “Call [business name] at [phone number with country code] and ask what time they close today. I'm [your name].” Wait for ChatGPT to return the call result before giving it a more involved task.
2. Ask for a specific call
Use a real destination number, including its country code. Include the name the assistant should give and any order, booking or account reference the business needs. For example:
Call [business name] at [their actual phone number with country code].
I'm [your name]. Ask whether order #482 has shipped, whether all 24 units
are included, and the expected delivery date. Do not change the order
or agree to any extra charges. If they need information you don't have,
ask what is missing and report back.
Confirm the action if ChatGPT asks. Merely connecting the app does not place a call. Keep the conversation available while ChatGPT checks the call status and retrieves the result.
Read the answer, then check the details
Patch returns a call status and a structured result: a summary, key facts, commitments and follow-ups. Your AI can retrieve these with get_call. A completed call also has a transcript and, when available, a recording. The recording can take a little longer to finish processing.
A connection does not guarantee that someone answers or that the request succeeds. If the outcome is partial, unanswered or unsuccessful, review it before asking for another call. Your call history and live-listen link let you check what actually happened.
If you cannot find the custom connection option
Check your plan and your workspace's app permissions. An administrator may need to enable custom MCP apps or approve Patch. Interface labels vary between ChatGPT accounts; OpenAI's custom MCP app guide explains the current availability and workspace controls.
If the connection opens the wrong Patch account, disconnect it and reconnect with the intended verified number. If a call cannot start, check the returned error and your allowance before retrying.
For shipment and order checks, use the supplier follow-up prompts. If you use Claude too, follow the Claude calling setup.
Start with 5 free US/Canada calls. Both your verified number and the destination must be US/Canadian, and each free call can last up to 5 minutes. Calls involving other numbers need a paid plan. See current plans and usage details.
